Developing My Ideal Social Media

by AEthedigm

I grew up on NapalmRiot (later RiotCore) and it likely had some profound effects on what I thought of as "correct."

When I was in high-school I was apart of a fairly close group of online strangers who congregated into the same IRC for the majority of the day. We didn't always talk, but we were always present. We could go AFK or play a game, and we would return to active conversation between members.

It wasn't channels, it was a shared singular space where everyone was welcome. When I set out to make AethCore, I had this same experience in mind. I knew this site would never be huge, but it will be exactly what I want from the internet. Over time, I hope people stop by and check it out. Some of them might even stay.

This site is built around no algorithms, no bubble to the top metrics. We don't have infinite budget. We don't have unlimited time to dedicate to development.

We're just some people who like games, like community, and spend time together.

I thought it would be nice to set up high-availability. Protect from outages, etc. But I don't want to get into a monetary spot where the site's continuance would be in jeopardy. I looked into Google Ads, but we were denied for "low effort" (that was the whole description). So I gutted all of their javascript back out, and we'll continue on with our current configurations, sans pricing offset from ads.

Keep the system lean and mean.
